Repainting The Bike Lane On Bedford Avenue
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
New York City bicyclists repaint 14 blocks of bike lane on Bedford Avenue. The Take Back Our Bike Lanes Campaign is a coalition of bike commuting citizens unaffiliated with any established organization who came together to challenge the sudden removal last week of the bike lane on Bedford Avenue between Flushing and Division in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We want to clarify misrepresentations in the press that the conflict about the Bedford Avenue bike lane is between the Hasidic and hipster communities in Brooklyn. It is not. The real conflict is between the citizens of the City more broadly and certain corrupt government officials. The Bedford Avenue bike lane has provided safety for bike commuters en route to the Williamsburg Bridge. Although New York law gives bicyclists the right to ride on City streets regardless of whether there is a bike lane, the DOTs unannounced removal of this bike lane has endangered those who use Bedford Avenue as the main artery between their own neighborhoods and the Williamsburg Bridge. The affected neighborhoods include Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, and Flatbush - some of the poorest areas of the City. The Citys removal of the bike lane resulted from a quid pro quo between certain religious leaders and the Bloomberg administration. Without consulting the community at large, Bloomberg sacrificed the safety of bike riders in the name of appeasing a special interest group. His back-door deal, made in the run-up to the mayoral election, sacrificed the safety of citizens who cannot afford the Mayors ear at the altar of political expediency and favoritism. That represents the worst kind of hypocrisy and cynicism. We support the recent repainting of the Bedford Avenue bike lane and call on Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes to decline to prosecute potential criminal charges arising from it. We demand that the city government consult the greater citizenry through approval of local community boards and the holding of public hearings in all affected communities whenever there is a proposal to remove a bike lane in the future. We also call upon all citizens to join environmental advocacy group Times Up! on Sunday for a New Orleans-style funeral group ride down Bedford Avenue starting at 2 pm at 99 South 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

So when a bicyclist is hurt, heaven forbid or killed using non approved lanes, Who is liable not the City Authorities!
I believe in the Darwin theory of survival "you give away to the larger vehicle" or learn to ride. -
Can you come to Missouri?

Brave masked shock troops imposing their will outside the homes of jewish families who live in abject poverty. Oppose our lanes! how dare they! Don't they know the glorious and wise middle class have come to liberate these areas in the name of emancipation? Indeed we came to their community, but we're rewritten the class constitution and if they don't like it, they can join the rest. Onwards to victory comrades, the city shall be ours

Hm, I do not hear any inner city deliverymen on bikes complaining, they adjust to the streets. These transplants are clowns, go learn to drive on a bike better and stop begging for attention. @mtanyc It's their community, anyone would hate these guys and self-privileged gentrifiers in general telling you how to run your neighborhood.

awesome

Then they should've still went through the proper channels to get them back, because most likely those will be removed as well. If you want a bike lane, register to have one.
-
I was talking more about the vandalism...
-
I know. They're doing road work and not even wearing orange vests. What will people think?
-
You are an idiot, they were repainting ones that the Jews lobbied to get removed.

Don't divert your thoughts with racism. Since the 1980's, (Reaganism, Thatcherism) it's Big Money that's controlling the politicans in the US, and in Europe. You might say that my statement doesn't challenge your premise, but I'd beg to differ.

My word, this gives cyclist a bad name!
-
If you guys want a bike lane so badly why don't you apply to get one legally instead of spray painting a bootleg one on the streets???... especially where city buses run their routes... no wonder the signs were removed in the first place... I honestly don't blame the Hasidic Jews for their opposition... that may how you do it in surburbs of Sheboygan... not in the mean streets of NYC....

Sorry if I hit home on that one. When I see an adult on a bike I think the same thing everyone else does. "So, how many dui's do you have"
-
Williamsburg hipsters should go back to Wyoming or wherever the fuck they come from and not pollute our city
-
hipster rebels, dont mess with them.
-
please submit to street films dot org or create another film to add there. I don't see ANY about guerrilla bike lanes creation/recreation!

These people have completely stripped New York City of its soul and aesthetic. They actually think they are contributing to culture and they are so ahead of the curve but really they are just dweebs from California and the Midwest. Real Brooklynites can't stand these people. You say you're from Brooklyn but what high school did you go to? Before you hipsters came, New York was an organized chaos and like a great anarchy. You want to bring order and suburban values to NY and nobody wants that.

@TRUGRAFFARTIST187, yeah because a "true graffiti artist" would give a shit about public property.

@antigov84 obvious troll is obvious

What you tool bags fail to realize is nobody cares about you or your safety. You are nothing but emo kids who couldn't make the cut. Maybe instead of buying a 10 dollar can of PBR you could save up and buy a car like an adult. Nah, you are too busy trying too hard
