Retro Bike Or Modern Bike? How Have Bikes Changed?
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
Bikes have changed a huge amount in the past 30 years. We took out Stephen Roche's Battaglin for a ride. Become a GCN Fan: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Retro bikes are cool. But so are modern bikes! We sent Simon out with Matt for a ride on a couple of very different bikes to see what's changed in the past 30 years. Matt was lucky enough to be riding one of the actual bikes that Stephen Roche rode to win the triple on, a steel framed Battaglin, equiped with non-indexed down tube shifters, FiR rims, toeclips, 7 speed cassette and Campagnolo Delta brakes. While Simon rode a Ridley Helium... Buy GCN Cycling Kit! I've got a 1953 Tour of Britain BSA if you want to go full retro

sounds like my 90s paramount pdg 5 where i did some serious mods to make it suit me better, i don't have a high rpm of petaling, but have a ton of torque and put a 56 tooth top ring on the bike and well, its certainly not legal in any road racing, but considering my size and weight, its never going to be a problem! When it was nice out, i recall the bike getting a nice brisk pace of 15 mph (felt very relaxed) and if you went all out, seemed to be around 27-28 mph. Keep in mind i'm not the model of fitness either, a good 300 lbs and well....folks that are lighter and such may attain a higher rating, likely much more so!

I ride a Pro Miyata, made in 1983(Serial Number confirms that)(*), my lady's father bought it new in 1986 in Boston, MA. It's like riding the wind. You can keep your fancy "new age" bikes, with all that confounded gadgetry, HA! Thanks for the videos guys, they're great. I WILL be keeping my 33 year old iron horse, but we all ride together, so it's just friendly persiflage! ;) *Changes are: rims, Mavic(I was run into the sidwalk, ruined them both), Brooks saddle and a new rear derailer(the original came apart a few months ago, I have it in the new ones box, in the junk drawer, haha)

modern bikes are easier to ride but when I ride my riley grand prix the satisfaction of riding a 41 year old bike is astounding.

Great location for your video Chepstow and the Wye Valley just down the road from where i live in the Forest of Dean. I've got a 2014 Giant TCR advanced and a 1989 PDM team issue Concorde Squadra built with Columbus TSX tubing. The GIANT is light, responsive climbs and decsends brilliantly. The Concorde although a little heavier is still a great ride even by todays standards and is an eye catching ride, great for a cruise down the WYE Valley on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I have a Mercian ( King of Mercia ) from 1980. People often remark what a beautiful bike. I changed the wheels to 700c ( was 27 in ) using the original Campag Record hubs and it now has clipless pedals and a Stronglight Compact chain set. It goes as good as it looks though a little heavy on the hills compared to my Cannondale Synapse. Nice video, Cheers.
