I've been doing it wrong with my 15 speeds I've had when I was a kid. Maybe on a 15 speed, it wasn't too critical since the freewheel only had 5 cogs. What I used to do is shift the rear cogs first, then shift the front gears. I have a "so-called" 21 speed and I shift correctly now. I just upgraded the front gears so the largest gear is upgraded from 42 teeth to 48 teeth. It is now impossible to go to the largest gear in the back and the largest gear in the front. The chain's just not long enough. I do love the extra speeds the new gear ratios give me. Upgrading from 170mm cranks to 175mm cranks helps with torque on the higher gears as well.

Why does he up and downshift on the cogset when he changes gears on the front chain rings? Seems like extra work. When I shift I stay in these certain ranges depending on the wind and the incline. With a bike that has 3 chain rings in the front and 7 cogset in the back, 3- big chain ring with bottom 3 littlest cogs on the back, 2- middle chain ring with the middle 5 cogs, 1- little chain ring with 3 biggest cogs on the top of the cogset. If I have numbers on my shifters I explain it by number combinations.
I saw an article online that explained it that way about eight years ago when I just started riding again 2 or 3 years earlier. Since I have been doing it this way, I ride much more efficiently no matter which bike I ride as long as it has gears,. -
simple but informative!

Excellent Demo!

I've just purchased a bicycle for exercise purposes not having owned one for almost 50 years. Until now I was completely confused as to how the gearing operated and having watched six (what I hoped would be useful) videos here on YouTube, I was none the wiser until I found this one.
What a breath of fresh air - a video that assumes no prior knowledge of bikes or use of gears and explains everything in simple language. Thank you so much - I can go out and practice riding and changing gears now! -
i have to practice like this on my bike...
-
On a bike, what is a "large" gear? Also. what is "shift down" on a bike.
-
I did not understand cross chaining and you just explained it to me! Thank you so much
-
thank you for the informative & ease to understand.
-
Very good explanation! 👏🏻
-
This was super helpful. Thanks!
-
I learned something I couldn't do right for 19 years, just in 3 minutes.
-
can you stand up while using the granny gears to climb a hill? will it be to much stress on the chain
-
Finally a video that doesn't assume we are cyborgs.
