Should Bike Helmates be Mandatory? - BTR Pulse [ep128] from BTR Pulse. Like this? Watch the latest episode of BTR Pulse on Blip! http://blip.tv/btrpulse/watch CitiBike has officially launched in New York City. Meanwhile, New York is one of twenty-nine states in the U.S. with either no or limited laws requiring cyclists to wear helmets and some discussion has arisen about whether the city should implement its own mandatory helmet law for cyclists. Requiring helmets, however, may hamper efforts to promote cycling, some research shows. It it believed that the mandatory helmet law in Melbourne may be to blame for that city's failed bike share program. Elsewhere, Tel Aviv and Mexico City, hoping to spur greater ridership with bike sharing, recently repealed their own helmet laws. With bike travel now possible for thousands more tourists and residents, BTR Pulse's Lauren Hawker asks people in New York -- including new CitiBike users -- their views on bike safety and helmet use, which is encouraged in NYC, but not mandatory. /// Featured song: "Safety Dance" by J. Since more pedestrians die of a head injury, the correct question should be:
"Should Pedestrians Helmets be Mandatory?"
Followed by the question:
"Should Car Helmets be Mandatory?"
Because there is more whiplash and brain injuries with car accidents that could be prevented wearing the correct helmet. see: http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/131211162650-sebastian-vettel-helmet-story-top.jpg
These helmets include neck protection, a common injury with car accidents.
I am sure that there also exists anecdotal proven incidents of knee protection, back protection, etc., that saved a life sometime or the other. So it would be much saver if all pedestrians walk like this:

I mean, safety first, the seat belt was accepted, surely enough eventually people will, and have to, accept this body armor as well.
Come to think of it, if my statistics are correct, each year 35,000 people die in car accidents in the USA alone. So on top of the above measures I think we should forbid all motorist vehicles all together. Doing this globally will save at least a million people each year. And who would not want to save a million people EACH year?
Oh, yeah, I am from The Netherlands. In The Netherlands nobody but racing cyclists wear helmets. Just about everybody between 8 and 80 rides a bike for daily purposes. And we have statistically the least bicycle traffic incidents a year.
Note: Watch for the irony, satire, context, and perspective. -
it should be mandatory, it saved my lifeTWICE

For twenty dollars. It is cheaper then a hospital bill. Stay safe and do the right thing.

Maybe people should learn to ride their bikes safely.
A helmet isn't going to stop the car you've pulled out in front of. -
50 times more likely to be shot and killed than to die on a bicycle in NY.
-
i guess people shouldn't wear their seatbelt - i mean despite numerous studies show that it saves lives - lets make it a personal choice. haha... because everyone makes GREAT personal choices everyday like drinking a driving. hell why is drinking and driving illegal too? it should be a personal choice. we all know your personal choice should include taking your life - and others around you - in fact it should be your right. right?
-
when you're walking or jogging at 60km/h then you can start to wear a helmet - not very smart are ya?
-
you should wear a helmet, for bicycling...why not for jogging, walking, and to bed..you may roll over and fall out of bed and suffer a head injury!! its all a matter of degree and how much government intervention do we need.

I have been riding in city traffic and cross country for more than 45 years. I have used helmets since 1988. I always wear a helmet. I am NOT in favor of mandatory bicycle helmet laws because of some experiences I have had with police who were hostile to bicycles. I NEVER want to give any cop any kind of excuse to hassle me. It should be a personal choice. I choose always to wear a helmet. But if one day I forget, lose it or it is stolen I don’t want some cop busting me for it.
