Cruiser or standard 250cc range (eg: honda rebel) are great starters, b/c the clutch is so forgiving. There is a lot of time in the uptake, unlike a sport bike which tends to have a split-second on/off clutch. Cruisers are made for torque, though, while a sporty is made for speed. Eventualy, that 250cc cruiser will have a struggle on highways, while the 250cc sporty makes a great commuter on the highway.

@Bartholomeusismyname i'd say being too CONFIDENT with any bike is the first mistake you can make. if you are confident you try to drive it faster/harder on corners and had more chances to fall. i started with a 1.000 and 4 600, i respected them without leaning too much 'till i felt a bit more confident..and i did fine. if i tried the contrary i could have crashed them ;)
