NYC, you need a lesson on what is safe infrastructure. A, curbs, you need curbs to protect the cycle track, including near parking. At least 2 feet wide where there is no parking, at least 3 feet where there is parking. The curbs next to the cycle track, as in if you were standing in the middle of a cycle track then it would be the two curbs next to you on either side, they need to be angled at 45 degrees, not straight up vertical. This lets hitting the curb less dangerous and allows more effective width to ride. B, width of the cycle track. The cycle track should be at least 8 feet wide for a one way, 12 feet wide for a two way. This allows passing. C, colours. Driveways and intersection crossings shall be paved in coloured asphalt and will have sharrow markings and dashed lines on the crossings. There shall be a yield to bicycles sign giving cyclists the right of way. If the cycle track is elevated than there is to be a sloped curb for drivers, not reducing the height of the cycle track. D, intersections. The intersection shall use the protected intersection concept if signalized, it shall use Nick Falbo*s design without traffic lights just signs if it is not signalized, you do not have to have the cycle track protected intersection design for all arms of the intersection if not all approaches have cycle tracks/lanes, and you shall modify the protected intersection design by making the cycle track more annular and add a roundabout in the middle for cars to go around at intersections suitable for roundabouts, with cyclists having the right of way over entering and exiting cars, and over entering cyclists, with advance stop lines, setback crosswalks for pedestrians and a protected waiting area, and a completely free right turn. E, signals. You shall give a leading bicycle phase, at least 7 seconds long, to let bikes begin to proceed and after that you may use a flashing yellow arrow to permit turns conflicting with bicycles. This is only to be used where there are low volumes of turning traffic and good visibility. If either of the previous conditions exist, there shall be a protected prohibited turn, where the turning vehicles have a green light when bikes do not, and vice versa. These ideas will protect cyclists.

you cant fix stupid.

It almost brings tears to my eyes thinking of the kind of cycling infrastructure New Yorkers like me could enjoy if only the politicians gave a shit. Instead I have to deal with motorists who try to run me off the road on a daily basis.
-
Ticket, ticket, ticket! I say ticket the violators. and they will stop violating.
-
Yeah, yeah,.. they're nice but they can't put them everywhere. Bicycle drivers need to know their limitations and drive their bikes accordingly. Motorists need to be awake and alert and not talking on a phone or stuffing a burger in their face. If people were more considerate of each other with neither faction acting all arrogant or like they have some special birthright then the present system would work fine.

Nonsens! Cyclists have to ride with the traffic to be seen. A seperated bike lane is nice until you come to the crossing. There the cyclist appears suprisingly to the fossile traffic and the crashes happen!
-
where are we at on this in the city?
-
Cyclists need skills to ride with or without bike lanes. I can't post a link, but search for my blog at VirtuousBicycle Blog

what about streets? only avenues have lanes. still we have to get between cars on the streets and they are fast as well.
-
What a Sick and Stupid Logic !!!! To find out the truth you should Go and ask NYPD urself ....
-
That's the ponit. NYPD do not ticket drivers as they are drivers too.
-
No door zones, either.
-
In Copenhagen we clap on the cars if they are in the way.. cars gotta learn mayn!
-
thanks for raising issues of bikers safety in cities, bikers rights w.r.t. urban space, suggesting practical solutions n covering on street everyday experience....time India too got its bikers n pedestrians' revolution.

Acá en Argentina, la bicisenda... es opcional !! jaja por favor espero correcciones

@1bmxdude I don't even wear a helmed when i go bmx in the skade park!
-
@1bmxdude These drivers in this city are out of control it's a must a lot of the time, Im even thinking of getting one
-
Can we have these in Boston too please?
-
It is much easier to build a WALL than to build RESPECT. But it does not solve the problem. How do you think that car drivers will respect bicyclists if you keep telling then that bicyclists should not be on the streets???
