Super fast bike could revolutionize transportation

STORY: It's certainly a head-turner. Whizzing around the streets of Berlin - this is the "ErockIT". Half-bicycle, half-motorbike, Stefan Gulas has been working on his invention for the past four years: [Stefan Gulas, ErockIT Inventor]: "It's a motorbike and in a certain sense it's also a bicycle, because the motorbike works as a bicycle. So you have to pedal in order to travel forwards. The pedals act as a type of accelerator. So you don't have an accelerator on the handlebars but you have to pedal. And the quicker you pedal the faster the motor goes." And this pedaling also charges up the bike's battery. Gulas is convinced the ErockIT - which can travel up to 80 kilometers, or almost 50 miles an hour, is a transport revolution. [Stefan Gulas, ErockIT Inventor]: "The thing I'm most proud of is that we've managed to make a cool electric vehicle. There are lots of vehicles with petrol engines that are cool - you just need to go and take a look at them, Ducatis or cars like Porsches and Ferraris. They're cool vehicles, but they all have petrol engines." The bike may have the looks. But it seems people don't quite know what to make of it. [Martin Alridge, Likes ErockIT]: "From the speed, I'd say it's a motorbike, but he pedals it, so it's a push bike. So it's a bicycle. But an amazing thing, absolutely amazing. I want one." The others who want one should be prepared to dig deep into their pockets. An "ErockIT" costs 30-thousand euros - or around 44-thousand U.S. dollars - and customers have to put down 25 000 euros when they place an order. For his part - Gulas says he expects the bike will appeal to creative, successful, people.

Nope, just doesn't work as well. Basically it's just a electric motorcycle with a nasty accelerator. You don't really charge the battery by paddeling because you maybe charge with 0.3 horsepower but the engine has and needs many more
-
Oh my god i want one.

Problem is the fatality rate you're going to buy as well. 30x that of cars.

To all the recent Comments regarding tech and price,
This clip is 8 years old. Since then batteries and drivetrain components have become way cheaper.
and most important, you can build a bike like this for much less but you won´t be allowed to use it.
Only speaking for germany, as the builder is german, you can expect another 6-digit-bill if you want to sell and register this kind of bike.
and btw, it sells for 13k€ now. very reasonable for a road legal 8kW build.
so don´t complain about a price from almost a decade ago.... -
Problem with all these fast bikes is you tend to die easily
-
i bet no one has bought one .and i bet they will not appeal to successful people at all.
-
For that sort of money, you can get a very nice motor bike.

1:19 - that guy should do voice over work. A voice like warm treacle.

I love it! But... 44 thousand dollars. No windshield (windscreen), no environment (extreme heat or cold weather) protection, no crash protection to adhere to transportation laws... I'm just being realistic. Lovely idea... Not practical on a mass scale.
-
44k could buy you a Rickshaw and a Japanese dude to pull it. Now that would be cool.
-
Ok, lets see. A vehicle that does not require gas, emits no pollution, can be charged by sunlight, does not require registration or inspection, no insurance required. Does a Escalade make more sense?
-
wow...
-
He will make an ultralite you pedal next! Cool I can't wait to read the comments! LOL

they've been around for a while. they're called MOPEDS, big brain.
-
Holy hell.. That juiced up one nut wonder Lance Nutstrong would be unstoppable on this thing.
-
What an awesome bike, hate to broadside a car doing 30 mph though. Not only would your body be severely injured but looking at your 44.000 dollar bike laying in a crumpled heap would just as depressing.
-
I could build 6 bikes with 1300W cargo mid-crank motors, 72v controllers, a 50mile range, that could top 50mph, for the same amount of money.
-
There is no way is cost him anywhere near $44,000 to build this thing.
-
As usual, completely useless. I would rather buy a car for a fraction of the price of this anti innovative piece of shit.
