TALL RIDER BIKE SETUP & BODY POSITIONING TIPS: Enduro, adventure & dual sport

From http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com Tall rider bike setup and also body positioning and riding tips if you are too tall for your enduro bike, aventure bike or dual sport bike. The big problem with dirt bikes is the cockpit is designed to fit the average person. Too short, you can't touch the ground. Too tall, and you have to squeeze yourself onto the bike. So tall riders get into bar risers, high bend bars, raised seats, lower footpegs, roll the handlebars forward, or get high bend bars, Steg Pegz, Cross Training Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJAvmhgP0h1AEKY8vTEJPJg Cross Training Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/cross.training.enduro.skills/?ref=ts Our enduro vlog series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlur54ugvzNJlUO0y6D10jVOGMLI4Raci Cross Training website: http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com Like to support our vids? http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com/cross-training-support-donations.htm When standing in the correct default body position, the tall enduro rider is crouched lower than the average rider which will be more tiring. This also puts his body weight to the rear more, which can affect the centre of gravity. When the tall rider is forced to sit more to the rear, this ain't what you want dude - cramped and feet are very vulnerable. And this cramped position makes the sitting/standing transition very tiring, a tough situation when good enduro technique requires both constantly. So the tall rider wants to do all sorts of enduro bike mods and the setup should make the cockpit larger. Mount the bars forward. I have used the Rox pivoting risers very successfully as these push the bars forward, and up as well. Remember though, too far forward and your handling is affected. Bar risers and high bend bars? Some love them, some hate risers, we've done a vid about risers. Move your footpegs lower and further back. The Fastway footpegs from Promotobillet are the most popular ones and several of our guys use them. Some claim they change the centre of gravity too much or hit in ruts sooner, we haven't found any issues yet and love them. Consider getting some larger footpegs too. A higher seat is good for many tall riders. You aren't as cramped in the sitting position, and the sitting/standing transition is easier too. Strap a cushion on your bike first and see if you think it's worth buying a tall seat or not. Some tall riders say a tall seat makes it easier to grip the bike with their knees too. Steg Pegz. Not everyone likes these but I love them. Tall riders are pushed backward and forwards on the bike more, and these take all the strain off your upper body. Watch this video link for more info. If you have big feet, it might be worth getting a longer gear shift lever so you aren't changing gear by mistake. Some guys suggest increasing your wheelbase by messing around with your chain length and sprockets to move the rear wheel back as far as possible. I don't know if this helps, but figure it's worth mentioning. Top riders are super fit and even very tall riders like David Knight leave their bikes completely stock in terms of bars, seat and footpegs. In fact I've heard stories of him telling other riders to get that shit off their bike! However, I think the majority of us are much happier to have some comfort on the bike and possibly sacrifice a bit of performance our gumby skills can't reach anyway. So what can tall rider do other than bike setup? Try changing your riding style. Grip the bike more with your legs. In our coaching, Birchy said to focus on your lower legs. Point your toes in and try gripping with the bike with your ankles. If you do fit a taller seat, you may find you can grip the bike with your knees instead. Body positioning. Generally you'll be less cramped when standing. And most of us sit far more than we should when dirt riding. See our vid here about body positioning. There are actually three different positions for your boots on the footpegs. The more you ride on the balls of your feet, the more room you will have on the bike. See our video about foot positioning. BIKE CHOICE FOR TALLER RIDERS There are long debates about this. Personally I haven't found any dirt bike that feels more comfortable. They all feel far too small until i do all my frankenstein mods to them. All I can suggest is ride different bikes to see if any of them feel better. So good luck all you tall freaks of nature. Ride tall! 6'10'' (208cm) here with 40in inseam, when you done laughing, any advice what bike to look at? I owned 2009 ktm 690 enduro for a year or so. Siting on the back I rode it without any tall mods, been cramped a bit, couldn't drive it longer than 2hrs because of my knees starting to kill me, but that's the life we live. Now I want to get back and have some fun in trails without braking the bank. Want a lighter bike, thinking of 07-13 made 250-300 2 stroke. I know no bike will be right size, but maybe some of you tried more than I did , and can give me some starting point? Any advice appreciated I'm still new to bikes and that ktm was my first and only bike

I have the opposite problem, I'm short as hell. And loads of people say it doesn't because there are plenty of other short female riders. But these "short riders" are like 5'3-5'5 and I'm 5ft on the dot :p

I am 6'4" and the thing about sitting far back on the seat is my biggest problem

What bike is that red bike he's riding

At 6 foot 3 inches kinda tall I have found that a 2009 wr 250 Husky with a tall seat is just as good as it gets ... I hope this helps some one ...

GOOD GOOD points ! im not super tall ( 6'2 " ) but i still struggle with getting the right posture and style. the key things i've done was get my hammer head shifter for a size 12 1/2 which just extends the shifter about 5 mm longer than stock.
adjusted levers to help encourage me to hold on to the bars with my elbows UP!!!! Lastly i Rotated my renthal bars forward enough to where it i feel like i freed up space between my chest and bars and now my arms feel nice and open.
Next is seat. i want to make my bike feel as narrow as possible.
Wish me luck ! i'll do some reviews of it when its done. -
Yep, clench the bike with ankles and calves. The high seat can work for the lower part of the knee to rest on, probably like a backwards steg peg.

I wanted this on a separate comment so please bear with me. I enjoy the way you produce your videos that while you're both speaking and playing back ground music, you can still hear the beautiful music of the bikes' engines. As you know, far too many videos drown out this sound entirely and I really think it takes away some (or most) of the essence of what those riders are trying to express. As far as the music goes, it's not something I would listen to on my own but I'm quite happy to listen to it during your videos. I now associate this style of music with your videos and it seems like 'home'. Thanks.

Good video, my only suggestion might be to quantify what too tall or too long (boot size you perverts) is. I'm 57 and 6' and on my Honda 250X, I put in bar risers and feel they help me quite a bit, my boot size is 12 and I've felt I could use a longer shift lever, especially now that I'm trying to stand up more. I don't feel the need to move my foot pegs but perhaps that would be wise. I also have a Katy Em 250W without any modifications and I have a hard time standing on hill climbs because the bars are back (I just found out I can move them forward-I'm dense I know) and climbing while standing puts me in a very awkward position; so I find I don't stand as much and I'm much more sore the next day in the shoulders and thighs. So, the point to my rambling is... at what height do YOU think you should start adjusting this stuff? Also, what size boot do you think would benefit a longer shift/brake lever? Is 12 (46 Euro I think) large enough to start thinking about this?

I'm 6'9" (206 cm). It's really hard to cover the rear brake during wheelies.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm as vertically fat as you are and have the same problems. After a long search I found a higher seat and it made the bike handle totally different. Best money I ever spend! My biggest problem was and still is the rear brake. When set up for use when standing, it was almost impossible to reach the pedal when sitting, due to my cramped position. Did you encounter this issue? The higher seat helped out, but it's still a bit of a hassle to reach the rear brake. Maybe I'm just lazy.

36" inseams do not go well for motorcycles

I feel like Kawasaki's are better for tall riders I heard they have a lager seat to peg radios but i don't know if that's true i own a 2013 KX450 that's heavily modified by pro circuit and it suits me much better than a Suzuki or Yamaha I feel really cramped on those too although the with of the Yamaha between your legs dose make it feel very nimble I like the thinness of the Yamaha.

I'm 6'4 thanks for this video!!!

Have you done a video on cornering yet?

Just shy of 6'2" here (187 cm for the rest of the world) so not a freak but my KLX250 flt like a 3/4 size bike when I got it. Since then I've had the footpegs re-welded further back, raised the handlebars with RoxRisers, reshaped the seat (not higher, just flatter) and the biggie: had 1 inch added to the swingarm. Now it fits.

I can't go ride today because it is raining snow and i don't have winter tyres on my car:(
-
Pls do a 2 vs 4 stroke video
-
What about fat rider setup.
-
I'm 1.85m. The problem is that my legs are longer than a normal person should have. It makes things difficult. When sitting i have to sit on the very back of the seat to cover the rear brake. When standing it feels strange to control the bike sometimes and so on... But there are some good things about it to so i can deal with it :)
