this video is good for people who have never seen a bike in their life before.

Thanks for this great discussion.... ! (I like the Louis Garneau, btw)

They fight like 2 sisters.

It's great to hear the greats in their field share with enthusiasts of all levels. Now that I'm older I laugh at how impatient I was as a kid when people slowed down for the average listener. These folks supply the details anyone needs to learn how to shift amply for most riders. Thanks.

This is sort of interesting but not a lot of detailed discussion about gearing. As a collector of old racing bikes I find the idea of 10 sprockets on the freewheel/cassette odd. :-) Most of my bikes are 10 speeds; I have two with 8 speeds and one with 14 speeds. The LBS owner has tried to sell me a new bike with umpteen gears & I say, "Why, I only need 3."

I don't think she got the Spinal Tap joke/reference.

compact crank 34/50 is better

i am 13 and i have a softride tri bike i got used and i have a 42 and i live in the mountains of virginia and i am going to change to a 39 soon the 42 sucks
-
but they do have off shore swims and long ass runs along with long ass rides :) you do it....

Actually most are jack of all trades master of one. Most come from a running, biking, or swimming background. Everyone has their best stage. For example, I came from running. Top 5 on the county/state champion cross country team. I'm not very good at swimming, and I'm about average on the bike, but the run is where I catch up.

these tri-geeks don't know anything about bike racing. a 39 inner ring is a STOCK gear that the manufacture puts on to save costs. one of the first things REAL racers do is swap out the 39 ring for a 42, 44, or 46 inner ring. tri-geeks are NOT the people you want to talk to about bike stuff. all they know is whatever the sales person at the shop tells them.

never heard of her...

I have problem shifting my front gear any suggestion

Joanna Zeiger has finally explained to me gear ratios. She's the best cycle coach on YouTube, I just wish she could present these videos by herself, no jokes or side comments, just give me the information, show me what you're talking about, and help me become a better cyclist! Thank you Joanna!

check out the Norseman triathlon, freezing cold water, hill ride and tough running, if an ironman isnt enough for you already...

I can't speak as a triathlete, but as a pure roadie sprinter, I always use a compact if there is a cat 1 climb or harder on the race route. I was speaking to Chris Froome, Berhard Eisel and Cav at the Tour this year at the end of stage 16 and they were all using compacts that day.
-
only in very steep climbs in rare stages like the one stage in the Giro and Vuelta in the last few years, but that's like ONE instance in a race a year and not every year. Tri geeks never see the mountains... or real riding for that matter. they are not really bikers... not really runners... not really swimmers... jack of all trades but master of none.
-
Even the pros use compacts in the mountains...
-
I'm glad this bugs someone else, I thought I was the only one...

I can't take her seriously with the sunglasses under the straps.
