Are fatter tyres faster? Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Sign up to the GCN newsletter: http://gcn.eu/gcnnewsletter We've seen in recent years a trend of wider tyres on road bikes - the improved contact patch and ability to run lower air pressure can reduce the risk of punctures, improve grip and improve comfort. But are they faster? To find out, we tested out some Schwalbe One tubless tyres on the brand new ENVE SES 4.5 AR Disc wheels - designed specifically for disc brakes, with a super wide 25mm internal rim width to compliment a wider tyres. Hey, it's 2017. 19s are back.
-
what happens if you don't have a wide rim, are there still benefits to wide tyres? or is that offset by the aero disadvantage. be good to have some cost/benefit analysis here gcn?
-
Could I put 25 tires on a 23 rim
-
I suppose they are good if you are a Fred or Touron or ride a road bike with a triple crankset.
-
What you can't tell me GCN, is the extra aero watt I need to spend using the much wider tires vs 23c at 42KPH
for fucks sake you have turned into a selling tool for the bike industry. -
When the 'official Pro racing decision makers' eventually catch up with the current science, it will all have changed again.. :-) Just look at how long it has taken for each 'adjustment of the rules' to allow 'new tech' over the years.. Most of the tech is not so new by the time the Pro riders are allowed to use it.. I believe that a new 'unrestricted racing class' where you can ride whatever you want with NO size/weight restrictions would be the best way for cycling tech to be pushed forward . Just think of the fun the Pro riders could have if they were not 'held back' by restrictive rules.. -) Come on UCI how about an #UnrestrictedRaceClass so we can really get the best from cycle technology..
-
What an ugly set of wheels and hate 28c's and 25c's they are slower than 23c's reasons....people who believe in wider tyres faster and more aero bullshit than I would recommend using 30 or 32c tyres :P
-
It's the height not the width of the tyre that gives more cushioning.
-
if you want comfort, then sit on sofa and don't ride, on 120 psi 700x23 is crearly the best option for fast riding.
-
If you are a world class rider in the world road time trial race then ok i can understand you worrying about a few grams , but for the ordinary rider the facts are a 28 tyre rolls better than 23 or 25, and the extra weight is very very minor ----- there is more than likely more crap in your gut and extra spare tyres around some riders guts than worrying about a few grams extra weight of tyres........plus they are more comfortable . so read it and weep if you want or just treat yourselves to some really nice wheels and tyres and get out and ride .
-
I use 28s ,have done for a year, my averages have actually gone up, and they are more comfortable, and have a lovely stable feel and no punctures!
-
Ok so they are fractionally heavier "only 20g per wheel" With all the talk of marginal gains that is more serious, not to mention rotating weight. I would say that is why they are not used in more racing situations. I didn't quite understand the square tyre profile bit being more aerodynamic either, I can't say I've ever seen a square aeroplane or bird (yet)!
-
He obviously hasn't been to Minnesota.
-
Si, thanks for the video. I agree and have vittoria 25 and 23. I prefer the 25, have more grip, feel in the corners and a comfortable ride. Although you set to 50psi. would you get pinch flats at that pressure?
-
Does this mean 50 psi is optimum on a 25mm tyre too then?
-
I'm not a competitive cyclist so I'm going with 32s to 38s which are a far more comfortable tire and supposedly better on wet roads as well.
-
does this mean i am going to finally find 32 mm tires for my 650c wheels?
-
2 things:
1. testing is done wrong: they test tires at different widths, all at the same pressure, compare, then at another pressure. but the max psi on the wide is not the same as on the narrow, nor are the ideal pressure for a rider's weight. so testing is done wrong. if you were to re-test these tires at, say, 100% of max pressure for each size (instead of a fixed value for all), then all at 80% and all at 60%, you will notice that the efficiency / rolling resistance curves pretty much overlay identically on a graph. I've seen a few lab tests so far, and they all make the same mistake.
2. now that we have done the intelligent thing of seeing through the flawed testing, we need to ask ourselves, why would the bike industry test wrong? they ARE intelligent, right? so surely this testing flaw is deliberate. the answer is easy: fat tires are discounted but cost as much to manufacture as slim tires. start a new trend, increase demand, augment the perception of performance... and prices of those previously low-cost larger tires go up!

Remember when everyone just had to have 19mm tires and Biopace?
Currently on conti 28's, which measure out to around 30mm. They've been great. However, if I were racing again, it'd be back to the 23's. -
Si' is riding a fattie road....ain't no weight limit on those rims LOL
"The future looks fatter" hahaha
