But, although we definitely couldn't have done without them, are they about to be replaced? Thru-axles are dominant in the mountain bike world, where their stiffness, strength and the fact that they're more difficult to get wrong the quick releases have made them a success. So, coupled with road bike disc brakes, might thru-axles be the future? Watch more on GCN... I think all this talk about Thru axles being stiffer is just nonsense. QR's don't move anymore than Thru Axles when secured properly in the drop outs and spoke and rim flex would make the supposed axle flex negligible.
-
how do you put the wheel back on withoiut haveing to touch the chain....
-
for a road bike it doesnt matter
-
Do the same test on the front wheel, it will be about the same time, as the qr forks have little bits that stick out the bottom
-
Hi. I notice you'e got an Canyon Endurance CF SLX. Any idea how I get the lever off the rear thru axel so I can install the front thru axel? I can't find any videos anywhere on it. Thanks Mike.

Morning, well here in US it is. i love your show and I have learned a lot about riding. I will admit I have a hybrid and not a true road bike but here is something I found for my bike and it slightly different style of QR. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N9DL64/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2TE9IQP68MWQU

"Nothing wrong with thru-axles" typical roadie mentality, com'on stiffer is better for handling. Nothing wrong with quill stems too.... I much rather be behind my 1-1/4 steerer bike on downhills
-
One more difference. Make a screw-thread fixed in your frame makes it more expensive in case of reapair/replacement. When you over-screw or cross thread in a hurry for example.
-
The Thru axle does not require an open slot, how much stronger is a fork blade with carbon fibers wrapped around the axle, rather than trying to hold an insert for the QR to clamp on? my pair of fat bike thru axles weigh 156 g and are 170mm long axles
-
i can't wait for a TA. maybe the roadie world will skip the "standard TA" and move right into a "Through Bolt". like the Fox Kabolt. same TA, just no handle. you need a 6mm allen to take the wheel off. in the world of "Aero" i would assume it would be their first step, not second. i have a TA bolt on both my wheels. never been happier!

How about Focus' rapid axle technology i.e. RAT? It's like a combination of thru-axle and quick release. It feels really fast but I haven't ever been in a hurry to change a wheel.
-
So, if I buy a Canyon Endurace CF SLX with thru axles where can I buy a cheap wheel for my turbo trainer (using these so it can fit the cups? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kinetic-thru-axles/ )? If I buy an Canyon Ultimate with QR I can buy a cheap Shimano wheel for £50 for the trainer..

I pray that disc brakes and through axels go by the wayside quickly and forever on pure road racing bikes, to me it's just added weight and complexity with very little performance advantage for pure road cycling and road cyclist. Braking is one thing I've never heard any of my fellow road cyclist complain of or ask for more of. Maybe it's just me?
-
I think I'll leave this new trick to the pros - losing my thru-axle that is.
-
Seems like a classic case of "roadies adopting technology mountain bikers have been using for years"
-
I like the fact that the rotors are always inline when you change wheels, but I find the front one does come loose after a 20 mile ride. Can you over tighten them ?
-
Nice video.
Keep in mind that companies want to sell and by inventing new features that looks great they will keep on selling.
another thing is, when you mounting the new thru-axel its scratches the aluminum surface of the frame and this can't be replaced, in all carbon frames it might be a bigger issue over time. -
I was in the shop a few months ago, and I saw a Focus bike with their new interpretation of Thru-axle. It was similar to quick release in that you pull the lever, but then you turn it 1/2 turn, and slide the thru-axle out. Very fast, impossible to cross-thread, and quite sturdy.
-
How stupid it is to increase the rigidity of the QR/Hub, while mounting tubeless tires 2/2,35"" wide at a pressure of 2 bar and suspension with 160mm travel?
MARKETING! -
Could you explain why or how does over tightening a quick release bad?
