When criminals attempt to outrun police officers on the roads, it often involves high speeds and dangerous maneuvers. Unless... But when disqualified driver James Phillips, 22, tried to escape capture recently, it was an altogether more sedate game of cat and mouse. Phillips panicked after police officers spotted him travelling on the roads on his £200 moped and he decided to try and outrun a police helicopter and four patrol cars. The banned driver reached speeds of 15 mph as he 'sped' through a housing estate on his 50cc Piaggio. He continued on his futile journey for more than a mile, slowing for speed bumps - but mounted pavements and swerved dangerously in front of cars. The chopper crew above Phillips gave a running commentary on his progress and at one point reported: 'Speed is fifteen - ONE-FIVE miles an hour.' Two patrol cars also tailed him with their sirens blaring as Phillips continued on his leisurely afternoon tour of a Bristol suburb. At one stage a large man tried to punch Phillips off his bike but narrowly missed him. Phillips carried on for several minutes until he gave up and realised his underpowered machine stood no chance of escape. The undramatic trip ended when he pulled onto a pavement as two more patrol cars dashed to the scene. Phillips, 22, was arrested for driving while disqualified and without insurance and dangerous driving. After being sentenced at Bristol Court Court, Phillips said: 'It was a stupid mistake, boss, that's all. 'I don't know what I was thinking really. I would not do it again - I didn't even think I would get away from them.' He admitted the offences as his barrister said it was more a case of stupid driving than dangerous driving.
