Upgrade Vintage 10 Speed Bike To 14 Speed & Indexed Shifting
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
I show how to update a vintage 10 speed bike (Raleigh Grand Prix) to 14 speeds with Shimano SIS indexed shifting. I spread the chain stays to accommodate a wider wheel. The 5 speed hub rear wheel is replaced with another 27" wheel with a 6/7 speed hub and 7 spd freewheel. I also replace the rear derailleur, chain. And the Huret friction shifters were replaced with Shimano indexed shifters. If I wanted to put the money into it, I could have easily spread the chain stays to 130mm, and upgraded the bike with an 8/9/10 speed hub wheel. But that would have meant going to 700c wheels. And the whole thing would have cost more. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/RJTheBikeGuy

Hey RJ!
I've had issues with putting my rear tire back on my Schwinn World, when I would tighten the quick release and ride it I would almost immediately feel resistance and it would be my tire rubbing the non-driveside chainstay and would have to go and realign it 2 or 3 times. I quickly realized that the dropout on the drive side is deeper than the non-driveside. What's a surefire way to keep your wheels aligned so they don't go astray? And is cutting the non-driveside dropout so it's flush with the drive side a safe thing to do? -
It says Raleigh but the wrap around and colour strongly suggest that it's a Carlton (they were part of Raleigh).
If you've still got the bike, can you do me a favour and publish the Serial number (should be on the bottom bracket) and if the bottom bracket is either 24, or 26 TPI (26 is Raleigh, 24 is BSA, or also known as BSC both whit form).
Thanks in advance, an old Nottingham bike mad kid who still has his Carlton Pro, from new (1981) and had a fair few family members work on both Triumph and Faraday Road. -
good morning!!! enjoyed the video from Ontario Canada what i pay for a bike like this all said and done??

I have two schwinn varsity both were 10 speeds NOW they are both 21 speed took the 5 speed rear free wheel and installed a 7 speed free wheel and it fit great on the old 5 speed hub next took off the double front chain ring and installed a triple chain ring Bikes
sfits like dream Heard time and time again this can't work BUT IT does and I did not do all the crap measuring frame and bending things on two 40 year old bikes -
Do you still have this one or made any more vídeos on it? I really like it.
-
can i do the same job on a bike with 110mm dropouts to use a 135mm hub? am i gonna crack the frame and destroy the freshly made paintjob?

I have an old Benotto10 or 11 speed late 80's bike.Love it, but have limited info.on it.please can you make a video on servicing such a bike.I would prefer to communicate with you through an email address please. Any relevant information on the benotto would be greatly appreciated.

what makes keeping it 27" easier? just because you would have to replace the brakes, or is there something i am missing? i ask because i recently purched a Sekai that i plan to build up and i wanted to switch from 27" and 5 speed freewheel to 700c and 7 speed freewheel. i intend to get long reach brakes and a different derailleur as well as the bb and cranks Are there other things to take into consideration?
-
ALL frame shops that re-space will remove bottom bracket first as you're effectively stressing the union between the chain stay and BB shell; the spread to get an extra mm or two is not the problem, the dropout faces MUST be parallel so the weld between the dropout and stays is not stressed.

Thanks for the video! Greetings from Brazil!

Hi RJ, nice video. Any tips on the new derailleur hanger you used for the Shimano rear mech?
I wanted to install a Shimano Tiagra (9 speed) derailleur on an older bike but haven't had luck finding a hanger that fits it. The one you used in this video might just do the trick, so any tips on the model number, links to buy, etc would be highly appreciated. Thanks. -
Do you need to change the rear derailler?

The glories of steel. You can manipulate it.

Was wondering if anyone ever put in an Ultegra, Dura Ace, Red, or other high-end group on an old frame like this.

Has anyone here every heard of A Ichiban sports 10 speed bike. I just got it at A Estate sale and I can't get any information on google or any other site. I think it is from the 1970's.
