What I do, is put it in second gear, then adjust the barrel adjuster until the rod in the hub is level with the end of the axle. Works perfectly!

what kind of oil is recommended for the internal hub? i have a '68 sears roebuck. one day i noticed that the nipple where you add the oil wasn't covered and oil was leaking out all over my hub. oops!

is there any way to rattle paint the hubs on one of these?

Thanks, straightforward... Man, some comments are really picky.... not warranted. - Thanks

is that a sturmey archer hub?

Useful information, thanks a lot

Light 20W or 30W grade motor oil is the recommended grade to use for 3 speed internally geared hubs. Anything higher is too thick. Light petroleum based oils are the correct lubricant for these. What the video mentions with WD-40 is incorrect. WD-40 is a cleaner and a water dispersant, it's not intended for long term lubrication as it evaporates very quickly. Things will soon run dry.

That's what I was thinking ... WD-40 is a solvent cleanser and a water dispersant. These Sturmey-Acher 3-speeds where meant to be oil lubricated. A light 30W grade engine oil often a recommended lubricant for these. That was the thing with the older Raleighs like this, they where designed to be oil lubricated in all the bearings.

WD-40 is not a "lubricant" (very common mistake) it's a solvent-cleanser that loosens stuck grease dried or rusted parts but eventually evaporates. It can be used prior to proper lubrication though.

hi i would want to know where buy original colour "bronze green" to paint my Raleigh all steel of 1965. Thanks and best regards

My rear hub (three-speed, Sturmey-Archer AW, 1981 Raleigh Cameo) disengaged completely from first gear today, so the pedals just spin round. I had tried earlier putting it into first gear while riding it, and it didn't catch right away, and then there was a clang, and now it keeps disengaging when it's in first gear. Have I broken it? How do I fix it? Help!

You didn't mention the hole through the rear axle nut used to adjust the gear cable. Also I have seen motor oil recommended for the geared hubs. Comments on type of oil?
