On Dec 6th 2009, The Chinese government issued a planned crack-down on e-bikes. The major impact of this rule is on the e-bike's speed, weight and licensing requirements. It basically states that as of January 1st, 2010, any e-bike which can reach over 20 km/h (12.4 mph) and weight more than 40kg (88 lbs) will be classified as a "motor-vehicle" similar to motorcycles and cars. They will now require license, registration and insurance. The plan is vague and many are confused on how it will impact their lifestyle. full story: http://www.juicedriders.com/blog/2009/12/16/debate-heating-up-over-e-bikes-in-china.html

I would rather see lots of E-Bikes on the road then a bunch of stinking polluting automobiles any day. There making a big mistake if this one passes.

I live in the uk and to be honest the law as it stands sucks . My bike weighs about 15 kilos but the battery is heavy. And my current batteries put it over the limit they make it go further not faster, so I would say a practical law would be max speed 20 mph and a weight limit without the battery and a motor output of 250 watts, and pedals fitted and not required to be used below 20, that would make the bikes a usefull tool not a joke like in europe with their pathetic piss poor laws,

you can run at 12.5 mph idoit. I think current legislation in alberta is great 20 mph without a licence less than 500 watts with a licence 1000 watts at 50 mph.

it takes less than 45 minutes for me to go 30 k on an ebike ;)

Governments are constantly seeking ways to generate income, control public movement and register any empowering technology in the name of "public safety". Total disregard for the environment and willful ignorance of conservation and efficiency characterize the automobile industry.

I agree, those people want to go fast should get motorcycles and ride in the car lanes. E-bike speed limit should be again 12.5mph and more bus and taxis added to the streets.
