What Is 'Mechanical Doping'?
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
What is mechanical doping? IS it really possible to bring a motorbike to a bike race? In light of events at the world championship, we find out. Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN At the cyclocross world championships in Zolder, Belgium, a rider was – for the first time ever – caught with a motor in their bike. There have been rumours about this for years, but this is the first time that we've actually seen or heard of hard evidence and a rider getting caught. Let us know your thoughts down in the comments! The UCI are holding bike the future of cycling what fools.

Sounds like something Lance Armstrong would use..Ban them from the sport...Too many people work very hard to win..Only to get beaten by cheats...
-
On the bright side, people can use this technology to commute around without getting too sweaty

Lifetime ban for everybody!

Anyone else think Van den Driessche was the fallguy (girl), for the team testing what they could get away with? life time bans for the scheming senior managers and mechanics, but give the young rider a second chance in a few years.
-
I'd say 'no' to a life time ban on this specific type of cheating for the following reason.
The latest advances in sports science have shown that athletes who use performance enhancing drugs will have bodies 'calibrated' to the performance they had when they were using the drugs for up to 10 years, so they're always going to have an unfair advantage as a result of their past misdemeanors (source http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24730151)
Knobbling the bike on the other hand lasts as long as the event it's ridden in. I think in this latter case a ban of 1 year minimum and being singled out for particular scrutiny of your bike before races (even go so far as making sure it stays in the hands of a UCI official once found to be 'clean' until it's time to line up at the start) would be acceptable. -
Idea for a video: Use a hidden motor to attack Froome/ Contador when they are training hard intervals. Film their surprised faces when they are beaten by an amateur.

The naysayers feel stupid now.
-
The UCI is on the case straight from the start, keep up the good work.

There are a couple of things worth pointing out (other than the silly "almost like a metal detector").
If you're going to have a motor, you need a source of power, usually a bloody big heavy battery. Has no-one noticed?
Presuming that the battery is equally well secreted within the frame, would it not make sense just to weigh the bike? The difference between standard and motorised will be ridiculous!
As to the scandal itself, it seems remarkable that you would get a team owner, the backup engineers, and the cyclist, all to happily go along with it. You couldn't possibly have even one member of a team being unaware. It's one thing with medical doping, which could be done almost alone, but this beggars belief! -
This may have been going on for a while.... Fabian Cancarella allegedly had a motor in his bike when he won the Roubaix (2010?)...and stages of the Tour of Flanders... theres a video on youtube featuring his unusual hand movements and then spectacular sprinting ability.. for some reason I cant copy and paste it here. Have a look, that was 7 years ago!!!

Both mech/dope deserve life bans, but with drug/steroid doping the muscle gains remain, and there is no going back to the a level playing field with dugs. Take the motor away and the rider is immediately legal, take the drugs and the effects are ongoing. Either way, they (all cheats) may have convinced a legal competitor that they will never reach the required standard and cause them to quit competition, so in that way the effects of either can't ever be reversed so both equally deserve lifetime bans
-
Surely no reputable sponsor, or sports agency, would ever trust anyone involved again, a life ban is the right thing to do, but naming and shaming any team that uses/employs anyone found guilty of this should be done, and previous previous results wiped from record books.
