Hi. I am currently planning out a long distance ride from Canada to Argentina, and a few years back picked up a Surly LHT for such an occasion. As of right now I am just using the stock saddle because for the shorter rides I have been on, as it didn't make sense to splurge on a better saddle (even though its become uncomfortable). However, I have now been debating switching to a Brooks saddle. For a ride such as this, is this a wise decision? Or are there better options out there for such a trek?

I'm a 50 year old mountain bike tourer. From my first 70s Grifter, to my first MTB in 88' onwards I've always felt better with a mountain bike style. I just got a Jamis Dragon Slayer 27.5 +, steel frame, hardtail mountain bike: specifically for off the beaten track long haul touring and having an aging lower back. Some people make disparaging comments "Oh it's heavy" "too much traction" blah blah. But they're saying it for themselves, they aren't me and don't know my needs. Don't listen to them listen to yourself. PS If you wait till August/September, when bike shops make place for the coming years products, you can easily make 30% savings..I got the 2016 Jamis in clearance for $1600 down from $2700.

Hey Darren,
do you think a Cyclocross bike or the Specialized Diverge could be some great opportunities? Or which special bike do you recommend?
Thank you :-) -
What are those type of tires called between raodbike and mountainbike tires?

hey Darren, have you heard of Eric Hites aka "Fat guy across America". he claims he riding across America. he started out at 560lbs. dude has had every possible problem you would imagine a man that size riding (or should I say trying to ride) over 3K miles on a box store bicycle.
he currently on the southern tier in an RV. he claims he's riding about 20 miles a day. of course this can't be verified. for all we know he might just be driving the RV at 10 mph for 20 miles. -
The comfort from steel thing is a myth. It really doesn't work like that. There's a video from legendary bike builder Mike Burroughs where he explains it.
