Which Adventure Motorcycle Type Should you Choose - ADV 101 Lesson 2
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
ARL goes over the bikes typically used for ADV motorcycling, and how each classification differs in their specific features. This video serves as an aide for choosing which sort of bike is best for you in your adventure. Footage courtesy of Survivalpax and Fish'sTriumphTales. Cameo by Soopabee at the end. Did he say 'smaller wheels to save fuel'?

Enjoyed your video. Your breakdown was really useful. Thanks

awesome video!
I just sat on a v strom 650, GOD that bike is COMFY/PERFECT...sooo comfy -
Most modern bikes are too tall. The KTM free-ride 350, which is low, has a tiny 5 litre petrol tank and a tiny useless air filter too. Arrrhhh.

Don't know about any motocross bikes that top out 30-40mph . I'm 62, my two current motos are 99% restored, '73 400 Husqvarna and my baby, '78 440 Maico w/490 head, 6 plate Barnett clutch....60hp 225lbs ! On the street you can't crank all the way open until 4th or 5th gear, or you will blow over. So maybe ride and get experience with motorcycles of all sorts, not just your 250cc watercooled rice cake before telling others how much you don't know.
Also have an '80 750 Kaw E-2 4cyl. that had morphed to an off road leadsled and back to a sport/cafe that I bought new. Have owned '60's era 90,125,160,175,250,305, and 450cc Hondas over the years,(CL-250 Scrambler my fav.) Suzi's, Yams, Bulls, even a Hodaka, loved them all, some of which were lost in a fire along with a beautiful BSA Victor and a Greeves I.S.D.T. that were being restored. Currently waiting for back surgery to heal (I still ache fucking bad, can't reach my goddam feet), then picking up my last bike (probably?) 2017 Springfield, makes me wet thinking about it. (yeah, that hurts too) -
Thanks. I like the point you made earlier in your presentation about bikes being a do it all tool. To a large extent, they still are, in most parts of the world. Based on that, the scramblers come closest to that 'do it all' stereotype. But hey, I am a bit old fashioned, and this is simply my opinion.

Nice video. What would you suggest should be the minimum ground clearance for an adventure/scrambler motorcycle?

Someone please help me! I'm in love with the Africa Twin (rd07) since I don't know when. I can finally afford one, so I was gonna buy one in the next season. But I really would like to be able to learn how to ride off-road. I'm afraid that it would be hardly possible on this big heavy bike. What do you advise? Get a tourer and a light weight second bike for off-roading? Or is it possible to learn everything on this giant bike?

DRZ400, dirt, single track, geared right a little anti vib protection, best bike ever. I tour with my DRZ400 6 hours 120km full camping gear days on end. Let's just say the bike gets attention due to it's setup. Yes, an 800 is better on the highway but let's just drop that off in a ditch and see how difficult it is to get out.

great vid mate, subbed
-
so is a dr650 a dualsport or rally bike?
-
Great breakdown mate. Incredibly well thought-out and researched.
I'm not a big fan of consumerism, it's a convenient way for big companies to get even bigger. But when it comes to the world of motorcycles, thank god for those money grabbing bastards who will come up with a thousand different ways to sell, what's essentially, the same product. The choice of bikes these days is pretty damn incredible and I love it. Unfortunately, once I think I've decided what bike I want next, I'll probably only own the thing for a few months before I see something else I'd rather have instead. :o/
Hey, was that a SoopaBee cameo at the end there? -
F800gs is my ride, the only truly mixed design.
-
dirtbike top speed 30-40? I don't think I've had a dirt bike that slow in my life.
-
Great video, just curious as to what windscreen you are using?
I have an xr400 and wind is alwayssss a problem in highway. Do you have a link or can you point me out where can I find it. -
Very sound and thorough breakdown of a diverse range of motos. Compromise, adaptation and attitude will get ya where ya going. Another great 101 vid ARL, cheers
-
Great vid as always keep them comin!

I spotted Soopabeeeeeeee! I remember his footage of you arriving at that time.
Another awesome installment mate. You explained it really well. No matter which bike we go for, there is always going to be some trade off either on the dirt or at highway speeds on the bitumen. We just need to work out which style suits the type of riding we plan to do the most. -
Those speed wobbles on the hwy had me puckering, I couldn't imagine how you were feeling at the time!!!!
Getting to know your bike, now that is some very sage advice. I don't often tell people, but when I got my bike, I pulled it apart and put it back together just to learn wheat was what. Dismantling a little more each time, to come to the point where I can remove pretty much any part of the bike if needed. Knowing what you ride and how it works is absolutely imperative, no matter what it is. I am loving this series mate, some fantastic footage and great advice being shared!! -
Thank you!! This was another very well presented video and I learned a lot!! I have the Honda CRF250L as my first bike (I don't remember if I mentioned it) and hope to do what I am calling mini adventures around the South East to learn more about what kind of motorcycling I would like to do in the future. I have all the luggage, just have to do some practice runs and get a little more comfortable before heading out on a trip! :)
