Why I ride adventure bikes. After a few years of dirt riding, I felt like doing something different. I kept seeing these photos of amazing views all within a few hours of my home, and thought it would be crazy not get out there and see this beautiful countryside for myself. 2 Why do you adventure ride? What feelings does it bring to you personally? Hmmm. Possibly for the same reasons we watch horror movies. I often scare myself when riding to the point of wetting myself. So I probably ride because it feels so good once I stop riding? But in an adventure context, it can vary from the thrill of blasting down a dirt road, to gliding peacefully past incredible scenery as the sun gets low on the horizon. Epic stuff. And of course it's why I ride adventure bikes, Mr EveRide. :) 3 What qualifies as an adventure ride? Ha, this is a good question! It's so amusing when guys get so anal about this on adventure riding forums. An adventure ride must involve at least two nights. Or you must camp in a tent. The bike must be over 650cc in size. The ride must be at least 200 miles long and involve 4.3 creek crossings. Yeesh. Life is the big adventure itself. And if you are doing it on two wheels, well that's an adventure too. Except for buddhists and hindus, you only get one shot at life with motorbikes so make it count. It's all part of why we ride adventure bikes! 4 Thoughts on light-weight vs heavier traditional adventure bikes? Well, this easy. True adventure bikes must 650cc or bigger lol. In Australia, guys ride across the deserts on Honda 90 postie bikes. Others will put some knobbies on a Goldwing instead. Personally I'm drawn to the smaller lighter adventure bikes as we like to do some hard trails on our adventure rides. But whatever turns your crank. 5 What are some dangers that can come with adventure riding? For we gumby riders, I'd say death or permanent disability are the main dangers. Oh and snakes, spiders and stuff like that. Everything is trying to kill you in Australia. But we still adventure ride. 6 Adventure riding is for older people - true of false? Is this a trick question? Can I choose c, all of the above? Ontologically speaking, truth is a semantic paradox within a metaphysical context. So yes there are older dirt riders who get into adventure riding because it's safer than racing their wheelchairs around a motocross track. But then there are plenty of cashed up young guys buying BMWs and hesitantly getting some dirt on their tyres. 7 Would you ever consider a cross-continental adventure tour? For some reason this doesn't appeal to me, but I understand why others do it. My biggest ride was an eight day trip and that only got me into the next state. It might take a few years to cross Australia at my pace. 8 What are the essential costs when getting into adventure riding? Principally the emotional costs. Scaring myself shitless after every ride requires medication such as red wine to soothe my battered psyche. 9 If there was one key destination or route for adventure riders? Apparently for many this is the nearest Starbucks. And then you don't have to wash your bike either. Adventure riding means so many things to so many people I doubt you could say there was one key destination... other than safely back home with your loved ones again, of course.
