Your Bicycle's Derailleur Hanger... Easily Bent, Broken and Busted
bicycles reviews | bicycles videos | bicycles online
Today's Bearded Bike Tip is talking about the Derailleur Hanger on your bicycle. It is a little tiny piece of your bike, at first look you wouldn't even see it. Tucked away at the back of your bike it is the small piece of stamped aluminum that secures your derailleur to your bike frame. Unfortunately, this thing is incredibly easy to bend which makes for some frustrating riding once that happens. As soon as that derailleur hanger bends your shifting is shot. Bicycle manufactureres purposefully make these easy to bend for a good reason. If this little piece will bend prior to your frame, then you only have to replace a $15 hanger and not a $300+ frame. Sounds like a good deal to me! So here are a few tips for dealing with your mountain bikes derailleur hanger. Different bikes have very different derailleur hangers on them. Just look in the video at the difference between my Giant Anthem's hanger vs my Kona King Kahuna's hanger. Very, Very different design. That brings us to tip 2, keep a couple extra derailleur hangers around your house, apartment or garage. Being that they bend so easily you don't want to be stuck with a bent hanger and no replacement for it. Don't rely on your shop to get you that replacement, the bike manufacturer could decide to switch their design and then you'd be screeeeeeewwwwwed. $15...? The #45 is nearly $35. What would cause my derailleur hanger to keep warping out of alignment on my Catrike that never gets laid over or bumped. For some reason, I have had to replace my hanger 3 time in 1 year. I cannot find a reason. Thanks

yo. wat if my derailleur hanger thread is stripped wat can i buy online to fix it besides buying a brand new 30$ hanger?

This made me feel so much better. I was worried I had done something stupid, I changed gears and my entire rear derailleur broke off and was hanging. Is this easy to repair/replace yourself if the entire derailleur ripped off and bent? I want to start learning repairs because it gets expensive taking it to people...

I was just riding along and then gears stopped working and it felt like something bloody exploded i look down and my whole chain and duralleuir is broke and hanging -_-

This /just/ happened tonight to a friend's almost-new bike. The fucking thing was hollow aluminium tube with a filled lower part. Just.. WHY...

derailleur, sounds like a stupid french word. no wonder it's a rubbish irritating piece of work!
the only good thing about it is it sacrifices itself by breaking faster than the frame could. i saw someone selling an extra strong one, arguing that you'd lose the rear tire if the derailleur went through it. didn't happen to me. risking frame over rear wheel makes no sense to me. -
Is there a reason why there is a different designs of Derailleur Hangers besides the name branding factor. Is there different sizes to?

When my hanger breaks my derailleur ends up going into my back spokes and ends up taking out my derailleur and some spokes any suggestions on how to prevent that?
